"Whether you are deciding on a visit to Phnom Penh or you are already there, this quick guide to 5 very different markets will allow you a glimpse into the life of the locals as well as to have a uniquely Cambodian experience. Believe me.

#5 BOEUNG TRABEK PLAZA MARKET: I would like to think this is a bit of a bonus find for your must see list of Phnom Penh markets to go to. It is hardly ever talked about. It is simply so local that most information about it is in Khmer and the information is lost in translation to us who don’t understand Khmer- meaning you wont find a single tourist while you meander for goods (thank goodness!) We happened upon the Boeung Trabek Plaza Market by accident but were very happy to find it for several reasons, one of them being air flow. It is an open air market meaning it isn’t held inside like the ones on this list (aka when it’s nearly 90 degrees you won’t be dying so much from the lack of air flow inside a sauna- like market, ahem Russian Market…) If you are visiting the Russian Market we recommend you take a short walk or a ride to this market for a refresher as to what it’s like to shop at a market catered only to locals."

"Boeung Trabek Plaza food court ($): on the third floor of the plaza is a cheap Khmer food court, where you can order your food from the selection of vendors. You pay after you have eaten! They have a variety of Khmer dishes. Also a good option for lunch with CCHR national interns. #18 Street 105".

"...the retail business on the pavement surrounding it is booming." The Plaza "sits in the middle of a thriving wet market".

"...the market alleys -- you can see the pavement underfoot and solid roofing overhead...it's a vast improvement. It's where I buy all my produce now."

"A series of shots taken in and around the wet market at the Boeung Trabek (BTK) Plaza. As anyone familiar with the city knows, wet markets can often be a messy and unpleasant experience. Phsar Kandal comes immediately to mind. BTK,on the other hand, has one of the cleanest, brightest and best laid out markets in the city."

"The produce offered for sale at BTK is extemely fresh."

"The covered portico that brings the light, bright and airy feel to the market, to quote an old real estate adage."

"The stone lions on the opposite side of the market, although not embellished in gold, also attract their fair share of youngsters."

"The upside to our morning excursion was discovering just how close we are to Boeung Trabek Plaza. Not only is BTK wonderfully photogenic, it has one of the best wet markets in the city."

"Probably the largest fresh fruit, vegetables and meats all under cover, as in huge aircraft hanger type building, also this market sells clothes, and everything needed for the kitchen, it's only about 10 minutes walk from Russian markets, it can be found at the end of street 456, Russia markets is on street 155. This market is unique as it's all under cover, with no access to direct sunshine, so everything is very fresh. The market starts off with outdoor food like fish and seafood being cooked on BBQs then the rest is all under cover."

"Neighborhood market with all the essential staff available under same roof. Close to TTP but this market serves me well since it's closer. I will suggest to avoid the vegetables and wet market during evening as most of the items will not be fresh and probably been sitting there whole day. Besides grocery, vegetables and wet market there are nice clothes store for babies and women inside the building and nice men's clothing is also available next to the main entrance. "
